On April 9, 1989, over 200 students from Earlham participated in the March for Women’s Lives on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The march was organized by the National Organization for Women (NOW) to raise awareness for women’s reproductive rights and influence the Supreme Court, which was at the time hearing the case Webster v. Reproductive Health Services. This case dealt with the constitutionality of a Missouri law and could have possibly overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion. According to NOW, 500,000 people participated in the demonstration.
