Earlham Gets Indiana Specialty License Plate
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 21, 2009
RICHMOND, Ind. — Earlham College is pleased to announce that Hoosier motorists can show their Quaker spirit by purchasing a new specialty license plate.
The new Earlham College plates will be available beginning in January 2010 for a fee of $40. Motorists may choose this plate at their local Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) branch or on the Vehicle Registration and Plates page of the bureau’s Web site.
Earlham’s inclusion in the Indiana license plate program would not have been possible without the work of State Representative and Earlham graduate Gregory W. Porter ’78. His efforts on behalf of the College were the driving force behind this successful petition.
“I sit on the Independent Colleges of Indiana Board, and I saw all of the schools represented with license plates of their own,” Porter explained. “It makes good sense for Earlham to have a license plate—it will generate thousands of dollars for the College and gives alumni a chance to show their pride and passion for the institution they graduated from.”
Porter says that his pride and passion for Earlham has grown over the last 31 years since he graduated.
“I have learned so much. Earlham has helped me to be a better communicator, a consensus builder and to understand our global society. Diversity is a quality of life issue in regards to the human infrastructure. I have brought this with me over thirty years to where I am today.”
Porter is serving his ninth term in the Indiana House District 96. He chairs the House Education
Committee and also serves as chairman of committees of several national and local organizations, boards and caucuses, and is involved in numerous community and neighborhood based groups.
“We are delighted to be able to offer an Earlham specialty plate for Indiana residents,” says Mae Turley, assistant director of alumni relations. “This is a great opportunity to show your Earlham spirit every day. Also, every Earlham College license plate purchased helps support the Earlham fund!”
